That was rough. It wasn't the first time I'd had to break the news that a loved one had been murdered or sexually assaulted, but it didn't happen very often. Usually somebody had already broken the news to the family or loved ones, and I was there to help find the person who had done it. As Kira's mother and father broke down, I couldn't help but think of how I would have felt in their position. If something so horrid ever happened to my Zoey, I honestly didn't know how I'd handle it. Would I fall apart, or would I seek revenge?

I wasn’t sure anyone could know how they would react to that type of news until they actually did. Jared's death knocked me down, and it took me a long time to get back up again. He was my husband, and I loved him with all my heart, but he wasn't my child—my daughter, my flesh and blood. My heart ached for Kira's family, and I knew I needed to find out everything I could to bring justice for the Ortez family.

Based on my conversation with PFC Summers, I knew I needed to go down to the CID office in Monterey, California—for what, I wasn't sure. Hoping to luck out with Stavros's contact, Major Cookson at CID, I had phoned CID and requested he prepare the sexual assault report and have it ready for me to pick up on Monday. To my dismay, the call hadn't gone in the direction I'd hoped. Instead of a helping hand, I had received another stone wall. Even though the Army's database now had the correct ID number for Kira, Major Cookson had insisted no sexual assault complaint or investigation existed in the system. It was another cover-up. Whoever covered up Kira's murder likely covered up her sexual assault as well. My phone buzzed, and I glanced at the screen. Just what I needed. Truly. I picked up.

"Hi, Zoey honey, how are you?"

"I'm great, Mommy. I was just talking to Grandma, and she said that even though it's not Tuesday and she doesn't have bingo or anything like that—she was saying how she hasn't had pizza in a long time. And I thought maybe since it's Friday night, we could order pizza and watch movies with Grandma. What do you think?"

Zoey's love of pizza was unparalleled. But she had a point. Even though we ordered pizza every Tuesday night when Mom had bingo, Mom had never taken part in our pizza ritual. It was just something Zoey and I had shared since my mom moved in with us a couple of months ago. But seeing as I was grateful for every moment I had on this planet with my daughter—a movie night sounded amazing. "I love that idea, Zoey."

"You do?"

"I do. You know, I could probably pick up some ice cream on the way home too. We can go all out."

"That would be so cool."

"What did you do today, honey?" I asked, needing some sunshine.
